What’s New: This year, for the first time, our 5th graders have begun exploring how to produce our print newspaper in digital format! Our 3rd graders are currently completing letters to pen pals in Japan.
The mission of the school library program in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District is to assist all students in becoming active and creative locators, evaluators and users of information to solve problems and to satisfy their own curiosity. With these abilities, students can become independent, ethical lifelong learners and readers who achieve personal satisfaction and who contribute responsibly and productively to the community and society as a whole.
NECSD Library Media Specialists’ Commitment
As a library media department, we are actively engaging in ways to integrate technology to support future-ready schools and libraries.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR LIBRARIAN
Access to information changed my life and it can change yours! Growing up in Jamaica, West Indies, my family was fortunate enough to own the only set of encyclopedias (like Google in books) for miles around. This meant not only could I research unfamiliar people, place and things, but children in and around our community came to our house to do their research. When my oldest sister became the librarian on my primary school bookmobile, I knew then I’d follow in her footsteps. First, I taught high school and then immigrated to New York, where I became an elementary librarian.
I have been teaching at HOH for 9 years and whole-heartedly embrace the District’s Vision: “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” Every day I strive to engage and inspire our scholars to become life-long learners and producers of information for the 21st century and beyond. How? Students are given a safe, space to have a voice, and engage in inquiry. Learning is bolstered through constant collaboration with teachers, and members of our community such as the Newburgh Free Library, City leaders, Head Start of Eastern Orange County, and the City of Newburgh Police Department, as well as expert guests.
There are two active 5th grade library troupes who are library helpers, and storytellers who tour both in school and in our community, and I mentor B.A.STAR an empowerment group for girls.
In addition to reading, I enjoy writing poetry, singing, dancing to Reggae and Country music, and traveling any and everywhere with my family!
